Theft Class for My Employees

I have worked very hard over the last several years to make a success of my little shop. I have done very well and was discouraged by some discrepancies in my inventory. I Am Glad I Was Caught

We both took an online theft class. To be honest, I'm glad I got caught. My Mom was right, to be angry and it helped me talk about why I'd started stealing and how imperfect I felt being part of this "ideal" family. I'd experienced so much pressure to get good grades, be social, look pretty, and wear the best outfits but I didn't feel this way. It felt like a role I was playing to please my parents. Inside I was suffering. I was insecure and felt they wouldn't love me if I failed.

He is Back on Track

When my teenage son was caught shoplifting, I was mortified. I thought that he was a happy teen but there were obviously things about him that I did not know. We begged the court for mercy and thankfully we had a judge who was able to see the potential in my son.

What Merchants Do with People Who Shoplift

Do you know what merchants do to people they catch shoplifting? If you ever have been caught you might have an idea. Actually, the reaction of a merchant to a shoplifter can vary greatly.

Merchants can go so far as to call the police and make sure charges are pressed, or they can be as lenient as letting you off with a warning. If you are a minor they may just call your parents and have them come and pick you up. Even if you aren't arrested, they may require you to take a shoplifting class. Also, merchants will often completely ban you from coming to the store again.

One of the most important factors in determining how you will be treated after being caught is your attitude. If you apologize and show genuine remorse, the likelihood of the merchant going easy on you greatly improves. I can assure you that a bad attitude will result in you being arrested and prosecuted to the full-extent of the law. Certainly if this happens you could go to jail, pay a very large fine and be required to take an online theft class.

Another factor in determining your outcome is the attitude of the merchant. If they have had a ongoing  problem with shoplifting, you will likely be prosecuted. Some merchants understand a youthful desire to defy the rules by stealing and if you are sincerely sorry, there is a chance they may go easy on you.

A third factor is store policy. Many stores now have policies in place that store security has to detain you and call the police. Your best bet here is sincerely apologetic and remorseful.

It is still better not steal. Being an honorable person, counts!

Who Gets Hurt by Shoplifting?

A good shoplifting class will tell you that everyone pays for shoplifting. It's not a victimless crime.

The first party injured by shoplifting is the merchant. Stores are not just a public good, but are there to make a profit. Stolen goods mean less profit. When a store makes less profit it has no alternative but to increase it's prices and security (which costs more money).

This leads to the second group affected by shoplifting, consumers. If stores have to raise prices, consumers have to spend more for their products. This is often a direct result of shoplifting and increased security measures.

The third group affected by shoplifting is our entire society. While one store having to raise prices for its products as a result of shoplifting only affects its customers, the thief being prosecuted uses valuable tax dollars to be arrested, prosecuted and punished. These extra dollars needed to process the shoplifter through the legal system will create greater need for increased sales and property taxes. If the city raises property taxes, all retailers have to increase prices to cover the added tax cost.

Getting back to the original question, it seems obvious that everyone pays for shoplifting.

What You Might Learn from a Theft Class

As a counselor for an online theft class I am often asked what someone might get out of taking a theft or shoplifting class. People generally think the only thing you learn in a theft class is to be beaten over the head that you should not steal. That is not the case.

Can you guess the reason why 99% of the students take my class? If you guessed to better educate themselves about the dangers of shoplifting you would be incorrect. Of course most people take stop theft classes because it has been court-ordered.

The courts mandate theft classes so that people who have had at least one theft-related incident can learn from past mistakes and refrain from stealing again in the future.

In a typical 8-hour course you will take an introspective look at your motivations and encouraged to ponder on why you have been stealing. The course can help you determine what triggers the impulse to steal.

The goal of the course is not only to make the student more self-aware, but it also provides practical lessons on how to deal with these emotional triggers when they recur.

I Want My New Girlfriend to Take a Theft Class

This is a very awkward situation. My new girlfriend has many qualities that I like a lot. She's pretty, intelligent, interesting, fun and talented. But there's one little quirk that is really starting to bother me. I think she likes to shoplift.

How do I know this? Often when I go to her house she has a new piece of clothing or pair of shoes. But strangely enough, I've never seen a shopping bag or even a receipt for the stuff that she buys. Have you ever shoplifted or stolen anything? This can be as seemingly innocuous as stationery or office supplies from your job or a towel from a hotel room. More than likely, something has found its way to your home that did not legally belong to you.

Retailers Prefer Shoppers Who Have Taken a Shoplifting Class

Tis' the season for shoplifting. Unfortunately as beautiful as the holiday season is, this is the time of year when almost 30% of shoplifting occurs. We all like to give those we care about awesome gifts. For some, this also means stealing what you cannot afford.

Before breaking the law, I encourage each of you to take a stop theft class. Of course I am biased, because as a teacher of both in class and online theft classes, and as a former compulsive thief myself, I have a personal interest in the subject.

Professionally, my vested interest is in you getting caught. You being arrested for a theft-related offense means potential business for me. That I like.

More importantly though, I want the opportunity to have you in class or in my office, so that I can help counsel you on how to stop your problematic behavior. I want to help you stay on the straight and narrow and avoid shoplifting again.

Now why would an employee have to take a 4 hour theft class? Have you ever stolen something from your employer? As a recovering shoplifter, in other words as a former person who stole compulsively to fill a need, I can attest that store employees steal in a variety of ways. Today, it is actually considered theft if an employee spends time texting, tweeting or facebooking on paid company time. Back in my thieving days, we either stole the product ourselves or abetted our friends to pilfer the goods.

Either way - remember that we all pay for theft. All theft is bad. Even if you only went home with a company pen - take it back. Pens are cheap. Buy your own. Don't steal!

If You Desire to Shoplift You Might Need an Impulse Control Class

Have you ever stolen anything? If so, what went through your mind when you decided to take a five-finger discount? Was it something you needed? Was it something you coveted? Was peer pressure involved? Perhaps, you stole it because you wanted to see if you could get away with it. Perhaps you wanted to feel a rush!

My Son Needs a Shoplifting Class

I remember the first time I got caught shoplifting. No, it was not by the police - it was by the person who knew me best - my mother.

I had stolen lots of things before that. It started with packs of chewing gum and candy bars, escalated to toys and baseball cards.
